BMW introduces the new BMW i3 Coupe Concept at the 2012 LA Auto Show. The BMW i3 Coupe Concept joins the i family and gives us a closer look at how the production BMW i3 will look like. The new concept is built atop the BMW i3 Coupe four-door variant and makes use of the innovative LifeDrive architecture.The development process of the BMW i3 Coupe Concept was shorter than the original BMW i3 . The architecture renders the BMW i3 Coupe Concept light, safe, spacious and dynamic, core elements of the new i design language.

The BMW i3 Coupe Concept is propelled by an electric motor developed by the BMW Group, which develops a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp and peak torque of 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft), and channels its instantaneous power delivery to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. The electric motor draws its energy from the lithium-ion storage cells under the floor. Positioning the battery units here has the effect of lowering the center of gravity considerably, which further adds to the vehicle’s sensationally agile handling.

The range covered by vehicles with an all-electric drive is very much dependent on driving style. The BMW i3 Coupe Concept helps the driver to optimize efficiency by choosing an appropriate vehicle set-up. The Driving Experience Control switch on the center console can be used to select the three driving modes, COMFORT, ECO PRO and ECO PRO+, which alters the electric powertrain’s performance and range. For example, changing from COMFORT to ECO PRO mode can extend the vehicle’s range by as much as 20 percent. BMW predicts that the i3 Coupe Concept will have a range of 100 miles.
